January 28, 2022

The Office of Assistant Vice Chancellor Innovation and Enterprise (OAVCIE) would like to cordially invite you to join the webinar on Making sense of patents: A guide for scientists and enguineers (Part 1 of 3) with Scott Bloomer, The American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) and Thomas Smith, Minesoft.

Minesoft is pleased to invite participants among lecturers, university staff and students to take part on the webinar for free.  In this free webinar, attendees will become acquainted with code breaking and pattern recognition strategies for identifying and extracting important information from patents. Attendees will understand the reasons patents are so different from papers and gain insight into how to use patents in their work.

Brief detail about Scott Bloomer the Patent Expert. He is the Director of Technical Services at The American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS). Before coming to AOCS, Bloomer worked for a major research department drafting, filing and defending patents and carrying out freedom-to-operate studies. After several years working in fats and oils research labs he became a Registered US Patent Agent. He understands patents from both the inventor's scientific perspective and the legal perspective, and how to interpret between them. He presents a list of patents relevant to AOCS members in the AOCS trade journal INFORM in a column that has run for 17 years.
