UBD PARTICIPATES IN THE JPO/IPR TRAINING COURSE FOR PRACTITIONERS SPECIALISING IN PATENTS IN JAPAN

September 28, 2023

JAPAN, Tokyo, 28 September 2023 – A group of sixteen patent professionals hailing from diverse ASEAN and Latin American countries recently took part in the eight-days in-person JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Patents, held in Tokyo, Japan. Sponsored entirely by the Japanese Government through the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and organized in collaboration with the Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS) Japan, this hybrid training program have already commenced virtually since 23 August 2023.

Blending virtual and in-person sessions, the program offered a comprehensive educational experience. Participants completed virtual classes before their arrival in Japan, ensuring a seamless and immersive learning environment upon their physical attendance.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was given the privilege to represent Brunei Darussalam again in this year’s training. It was attended by Awang Abdul Hanif bin Haji Morsidi, IP Officer from the Office of Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Innovation & Enterprise) at UBD.

The primary objective of this training initiative was to equip participants with advanced insights and skills related to patent management, focusing on Japanese methodologies and industry best practices. The curriculum covered diverse aspects such as patent filing, prosecution processes, strategic commercialization, enforcement strategies, and the nuances of managing infringement litigations.

Culminating with a remarkable highlight, participants were granted an exclusive industry visit to the Panasonic Center and visit to Intellectual Property High Court at JPO. These visits provided invaluable real-world insights into effective patent management, particularly through the lens of a prominent business entity and regulator.

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) stands as the authoritative governmental body responsible for overseeing Intellectual Property (IP) matters within Japan. Notably, this marks the second occasion where UBD has been privileged to represent Brunei Darussalam in their signature training program, following UBD’s last participation in 2019.
